Tiny blisters on roof

Hi was there a problem with the mattress
Had roof hinges checked for corrosion they are being replaced, also the seat/bed reclining switch is being replaced
The mattress is apparently the cause of the corrosion, Ours was still in the plastic bag it came in, we don’t have any corrosion but MB are replacing the mattress... the seat bed and roof are manual in the Horizon :)

Well roof has arrived and been painted two months later than originally told. Goes into MB Cardiff next week for replacement, we’ll see how it goes!

My roof and bed frame have arrived, when, I don't know because they didn't notify me. I went in yesterday to the dealer and asked. I am booked for next month to have them fitted. They said it will take about 3 or 4 days.
I asked what is actually wrong with the mattress. They haven't got a clue. I asked if they have to paint the new roof. They said it should come colour coded to the chassis number. How true that is I wouldn't bet my life on it.

Thanks for your update, barons pierced the blisters when we took it to them for inspection and they were dry,on reflection we now think maybe respraying the existing roof might be the better option pr voiding they do a good job, replacing the roof, disconnecting every thing including the canvas and roof lining could be a recipe for other problems especially if they haven't done many,we wait to see what Mercedes decide ,just out of curiosity is it barons in Norwich that you are dealing with or do they have other branches?many thanks ,Millie

I have to agree with that, just purchased mine and when cleaning the roof I discovered a couple of blisters and a small patch of missing paint.
My worry is how good the repair will be. Bearing in mind Mercedes Stockport have just replaced the fridge stat and now the ambient lighting underneath doesn’t work

They told me it doesn’t come colour coded, they have to send it to paint shop when it gets to this country with the chassis number and it will be painted the same. Cardiff MB have told me they have done this now and can fit it next week, she even said hope the colour is the same!

Had a new roof fitted about a month ago. It is supplied unpainted and has to be painted by the dealer’s local body shop if they don’t have one. Mine had to be painted twice as the dealer wasn’t happy with the body shop’s first attempt!

While the van was having the new roof I received the recall notice for the mattress. I discussed this with the dealer and decided to leave the van with them so the bed parts could be replaced. It was at the dealers another five weeks until I had to retrieve it for a holiday I had booked. Some, but not all of the parts had arrived in that time. When I suggested to the dealer that you would expect Mercedes to have organised the repair ‘kit’ for the job before the recall was issued, he laughed. Apparently this is par for the course! No wonder my car is a Toyota.

Well got the van back yesterday 3-4 days turned into 2 weeks but after a thorough inspection looks as good as new. Cardiff MB did a decent job of the work, not very good at keeping in touch with progress but at least the van is back to normal. Had a look at the bed recall at same time and nothing needed on that front, is a late 2018 model. So now to fit the solar panel supplied by Roger at Solar Camper Solutions.

Happy days

Happy days glad it's all sorted for you , I've a basic thread on the solar panel fitting on here somewhere might be worth a look, I've just returned my van this morning as it's leaking from the roof after recent repair

So panel fitted, think the black version looks much better, blends in and the wiring is very easy now, no cutting wires, just plug it in the way Roger has it organised, excellent bit of kit

The black is very nice, looks good on your colour MP.. can that charge be switched between main and leisure battery? Our van sits parked for days and we have a dash cam that eventually turns itself off due to the built-in battery protection system. Being a Horizon the leisure battery gets very little use, in fact I can’t think of any time we use it. I guess some of the interior lighting uses it.... not sure, I should check.

Hi, the way I understand it from the manual and what I’ve read in various places once the leisure battery is fully charged it will then top up the starter battery. No switching involved, does it itself.

Wow, that’s well thought out.. I will check the Horizon details... we don’t have hookup, I wonder if that management is part of that charging/12/240v system.

Just collected my MP after 4 days with the dealership. They were supposed to change the roof and do the mattress recall job. I specifically asked them if both jobs will be done and they said yes. I was a little skeptical and I was proven right. They have only done the mattress recall job. So annoying. Half the time their right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing and vice versa.
I asked to see the warranty manager. He was a little more knowledgeble but even he had to admit he didn't quite know what was actually wrong with the mattress, guessing it might be something about retaining moisture. I then asked him about my roof and he said it was in and he was just about to take it to the bodywork people to have it painted. Now the next bit is a bit worrying. He said it's the bodywork people who paint and replace the roof. They don't actually replace the roof themselves. What !!?? I just hope the bodywork people know what they are doing. I must say I am a little worried. Will have to wait and see.

That’s not what happened in Cardiff, they had to wait for it to come back painted from the body shop and then they called me to bring MP in. They then took old roof off and replaced in situ at Cardiff MB, it was there 2 weeks as they thought they ordered all the spares but missed a few so time spent in the shop with no roof waiting for parts.

Hmmm well not all MB dealerships have a body shop. If that’s the case then they will use a MB authorised body shop locally, at least that’s what our local MB dealers do.. I had to take my MP to the body shop, they did all the papers and MB authorised the work. We are waiting for parts to arrive. The body shop will do all the work, makes sense since all that stuff needs re-sealing and trims need adding.... I’m not sure it’s the kind of work a fitter should be doing.

You are correct. In fact the great majority of dealers don't have their own body shop, if any. Most subcontract the work to authorized body shops. But how many body shops would have removed and refitted a MP's roof with all the related mechanisms. Having said that how many dealers would have done that too. :( :( I think experience really counts in this case, so whichever way it's done, have to wait and see the result. Fingers crossed.

Our Marco Polo went back to the dealership to have the roof replaced, plus bed frame / mattress recall and a few other things. We booked it in before summer for September as we knew we would want to use it over the summer - so plenty of notice, plus I had started the conversation with them back in March, including showing them the roof blisters and corrosion.
A few days repair turned into 3 weeks. The roof was taken to a specialist body shop to be painted and then returned to dealer for fitting. The roof looks fine but it doesn't look like it fits properly at the back so that needs looking at again. But most frustratingly, they do not have the parts to replace the corroded bed frame. Honestly you would've thought with a recall that this would be sorted but like GeorgeG it appears to be par for the course. Got to say I'm unimpressed. Do you think there are MP owners out there who have nothing wrong with their vans and it's only those on the forum?? MB are clearly struggling with these repairs - not sure why Westfalia isn't involved, any one know why??
Apparently lack of parts is due to supply from Germany. Not sure how to escalate in MB so if anyone has any ideas that would be great.
Still love the van though........
