Tiny blisters on roof

Hi, we have been advised the warranty claim paperwork has been started but a new roof is not currently available. I’ve explained i’m not in any hurry to get a new roof and would prefer to wait until MB are able to give assurances the issue has been resolved to avoid the potential for multiple replacements. Interestingly quoting the posts on this forum seemed to help and I also mentioned that another Carlisle customer was monitoring the situation and Katie the warranty specialist at Carlisle MB said she would prepare to receive another similar claim.
Thanks for the update, it was Katie we dealt with over the previous roof issue and they were very good.

Discovered the dreaded roof blisters and has been into Mercedes Cardiff on a few occasions for inspection. Last week Mercedes finally accepted the claim and agreed to replace the roof, all parts ordered and today they say roof not expected to arrive from Germany until 29th July earliest!

I have now joined the "new roof brigade". I have about a couple of dozens of blisters on the sides of the roof, some have popped exposing the white undercoat. Took it into my local MB dealer, not the one I bought my MP from. One look at it and they said it needs a new roof. Not the first one they have seen, but the worst !!
So now I have to wait for a new roof.

We took ours in for some warrantee evaluation a week ago. Several of the poppers that the roofline catch-net attach to have broken off, the left rear speaker wasn’t working, the steering wheel + volume button works but doesn’t click with poor feed back. There are several poorly attached seals around the boot and the rear curtain runner keeps dropping (MP Horizon) and of course the obligatory roof measles...

MB were really good, all parts are on order, this includes new upper bed and complete tailgate trim. The speaker turned out to be a poor connection under the dash and since they use a MB approved body shop I have a appointment to get the roof assessed there. I don’t think this is a concern but apparently this was the first they had seen and they did appear genuinely surprised at the state of the roof (Salisbury).

We also have a micro blister on the roof MB York are aware of the issue and seem to think that a roof replacement will be their solution.

I had telephone call yesterday from MB dealer workshop , they have just been informed another roof will be supplied ,as my first was the measles ,and my seconds had 2 large bumps visible the day after the new roof was fitted.

Just returned from a six week trip in the MP having booked in before we left for a new roof to be fitted by Mercedes Poole from Monday onwards. Contacted them today to check if all systems were go, to be told the roof (as well as hinges and other metal work under the upper bed) has not arrived from Germany yet and there is no indication of a likely delivery date! The replacement roof was ordered in early April so this is rather concerning. I imagine the Westfalia factory is inundated with orders for roofs.

It looks like the whole replacement situation is on hold to me
I’ll email my contact at the Westfalia factory to see if he can shed any light on the situation and report back. He advised me in early March that they were yet to find a definitive answer to the cause of the blisters. I think you’re probably right Steven - if new roofs are also blistering the whole replacement programme may be on hold until the cause is found.

My MP was due to go in for a new roof on 22nd July, just received a call from the bodyshop telling me that the roof has now been put on back order and they will contact me when they have further information.

My roof has arrived at Merc UK in Milton Keynes last week so don't think there's anything on hold, just poor supply?

Apologies for not updating on the factory situation. My mole told me that because they had so many orders for new Marco Polo conversions from Mercedes the replacement roofs were being released bit by bit, as he put it. He also said that they are having to produce A LOT of replacements.

In my case, after returning from six weeks away, with the van being due to go in for a new roof and then being told there was no sign of it and no idea when it would turn up - it turned up last week and is now being painted. So I suppose it’s a case of being patient.

Regarding the metal hinge (and other parts) corrosion in the roof area, I was told it is down to some chemical in the mattress! My dealer approached Mercedes about this and apparently they will be issuing a technical bulletin with instructions as to what parts to order and the repair procedure to follow. We’ll have to wait and see if it becomes subject of a recall.

I've seen similar on my roof to some of the pictures here but assumed it was a rivet underneath the paintwork but having cleaned the van a couple of times recently I thought they were multiplying but I thought I was going mad.

Should the roof be perfectly smooth, no lumps or bumps at all ?

It should be, but if you have blisters you need to book your MP in for a replacement roof under warranty. It will only get worse.

Dealer has taken photos and sent to MB, hopefully they’ll approve a replacement roof as they were getting worse.

I had an email from MB dealer last week to say they had not yet received my new roof and had no idea of arrival date.
I have just got recall for corrosion on roof hinges
