Speaker upgrade Marco polo 2012

Just upgraded front door speakers to GAS 6.5 komponent set, worked nicely with adapter ring, and glueing the tweeters in the door panel. It made a tremendous difference in sound quality.

Anyone that have done upgrade of rear speakers in the Westfalia interior, the ones sitting in a consol above the back door. How to get access and what to remove? Any hints apreciated.

Hi, I'm just pondering the same problem. Did you get anywhere with working out how to remove the overhead storage locker to get access to the rear speakers?

Hello!

Thanks! Still scratching my head how to actually do it.

Found this with Google AI:

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Remove the rear roof module/overhead console

The rear speakers are integrated into the roof panel or the top section of the overhead console, right by the tailgate opening.
• Open the tailgate fully.
• Remove the visible screws (often hidden behind small plastic caps) securing the rear roof panel or the upper part of the console housing.
• Use plastic trim removal tools to gently pry the panel loose from its clips. Start at one side and carefully work your way around.
• Important: Do not pull the panel all the way down immediately. There are cables connected to the back—for both the speakers and any interior lighting—that must be disconnected first.

2. Remove the old speakers

Once the panel is lowered or detached, you will see the backs of the speakers and their mounting brackets.
• Disconnect the speaker wiring connector.
• Unscrew the speakers from their mounts. If they are secured with factory rivets, you will need to carefully drill out the center of the rivets using a power drill to remove them.

Did Ai provide a source link for that? That could be worth a look. I think there's a bit more to it than it suggests.

If you open the boot and look in the 3 storage compartments you can see a black bracket which I think must be fixed to the roof, taking the weight of the unit. Detaching the grey plastic storage unit from that mounting bracket is probably key, but I think it might be riveted to it though. I'll try and get some photos to post. There are some visible screws in the the grey plastic which can be removed (4 in the van and 1 or two under the boot seal. Removing those does start to drop the unit down but its also held by a rod (named clothes rail in the manual). I haven't removed that yet, but that will be my next step.

Hopefully we're not the first people to tackle this job on here. I'm in the same boat as you, my rear speakers started buzzing, so I want to replace them, and I figure I may as well upgrade the whole system (fronts too) whilst I'm at it.

Awesome! I put that webpage into google translate, it's a really comprehensive tutorial! Good find!

That confirms that you do have to drill out the rivets then. I think that's all the info we should need to both give it a go. I haven't ordered replacement speakers for the rear's yet, I was looking at 100mm 2 way component ones but I'll get it stripped down to confirm that's right before I order any. I'll give it a go this weekend and I'll let you know if I run into any issues.

Where did you find the exploded diagram btw? ...I couldn't see it on the French forum.

Found it in this thread

This is the site, but its a bit hard to navigate without understanding the language , looks like good info though.

I had a Kenwood stereo already with carplay, EQ and pretty good output

Managed to get component speakers 6,5 inch in front doors. Had to cut a bit in the door panels and glued the tweeters to the door panels. Went with GAS, I am a Swedish guy . The thing is that they are easy driven so no amplifier needed. Made a huge difference.

I will do the same and open up and see what fits, this would be my plan for the rear ones.

Nice to have a friend out there, let us know how it goes.
