Roof racks

hi All,

Thule seem to be replying to people saying they don’t have a compatible kit which only leaves the very industrial looking £290 kit from westfalia

However I discovered the thread below which has this working combination:

The Thule roof rack is composed of three parts.

1. Thule 763 square tube, is also available as Aluschine.

2. Tuhle Kit 3084 fixed point XT (183084)

3. Thule 753 footset low fixpoint

Adam,

Hi. Great spot. Can you advise if you tried this on your MP? I already own Thule roof bars so would be great if the fitting kit and footset are suitable to save me buying new bars.

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Andy,

We’ve not tried it ourselves yet as haven’t had the need, however based on that thread I certainly wouldn’t have a problem buying that kit to try.

Buy online and you have 14 days to return if it doesn’t work!

Kind regards

Adam

Hey Adam,

Interesting feedback from Mercedes technical re the load capacity of the MP below. Not sure what they mean re 3 secure points so will question that, but if it can carry in excess of the 50kg then makes interesting option to free up interior space on longer trips when taking all the kids paraphernalia!!!

Have ordered the bits you suggested off the amazon folks, but already have an aero bar so hoping that fits. Should be here mid week so will let you know how we get on.

All the best,

Andy.

Thank you for contacting Mercedes-Benz Customer Service. I am writing in response to your recent telephone conversation with my colleague Janna on 19th July 2018.

Since your conversation with Janna I have made contact with our Technical Specialists to discuss your concerns. They have advised me that the Maximum Load with 3 secure points is 150kg. They have further explained that the weight is not directly on the roof but on the roof rails which is then distrubted by the roof bars. In order to advise further they would need to see the part number, however should you have any further requirements please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely

Hi Adam,

Well the two kits arrived this week and fitted them to the aero Thule bars I already had this eve. In my opinion looks better than the Westfalia ones. Thanks for the recommendation!!!!

The t track fitting kit needed a little bit of fettling to fit - there is a collar a quarter of the way down the Allen bolts which lock the brackets into the t track which was removed with m6 die to allow the Allen bolts to screw down far enough to secure them properly. May get some slightly different brackets made by an engineering firm as not 100% happy with the width of the brackets in the t track. But that’s for another day.

Eventhorizon- hi - from memory the roof can lift 50kg of weight. We are taking kids camping for a week which means lots of stuff!! Using it to store duvets, pillows and other bulky light weight stuff for the journey. When we get there it will be emptied into the awning.

Cheers.

Andy

Excellent. I had presumed (incorrectly) that the bars would fit to the side rails on the main body of the car, not rails on the raised roof. Enjoy camping with the kids!

Thanks for all the information...really helpful

I was wondering if I could trouble you for the measurements of the slot, I’m making a small rain porch which will clip into the roof rails and the awning rail but my MP has been delayed for emissions testing and I have no other way of getting the measurements. Just approximate slot width and depth would do.. or a sketch of the cross section?

Many thanks in anticipation, Andrew

Hi

So it’s 16mm wide opening at the top of the rail. Opens up to 26mm wide below that and stays that width for about 6mm.

It was dark when measured and I wear glasses so all approx measurements!

If you pm me your email I’ll send you a pic of drawing I made of dimensions. iPhone pic is too large to upload.

Cheers

Andy

I fitted my Thule roof bars on Saturday, 753 / 3084 and all fits fine. What's the problem?

As a matter of interest a friend has a 2007 Vito based Westfalia Marco Polo and the roof tracks are identical.

I’ve also bought and fitted the same after the details posted here. Its absolutley solid. The track plates had to go in over the rivets in the track with the bolts loose and then I tighted them with the Alan key otherwise the bolts protrude too far below the plate to pass over the rivets. The feet are then placed on to the bolts and tightened with the nuts but other than that it was reasonably straightforward.

@The.dunnster do you know what length of your aero bars?

I’m in the same boat, don’t like the industrial Westfalia attempt, it also appears to be far too close to the roof to slide a bungee under. Defiantly going down the Thule route.
