This was only available in the "Aqua Marine" color last year and I didn't want that.

Saw that colour on an MP up in Keswick a couple of weeks ago, agree it's not nice at all

Hi Paul, welcome along to the forum :Welcome: and sorry to hear of your issue with the pop-top fabric. Can I ask what year model you have?

I have a 2017 MP and the control console will not allow you to open/close the roof without first dropping the drivers window, I assume from your post that your system in fact does allow this to happen?
Can I ask, did the supplying dealer give you a vehicle handover where they explained this risk and other features of the MP?
It’s the 2021 model, and no information was given. Just a book to read and on your way

Very sorry to hear about your roof problem Paul.
So much for dealer handover !
Is it a newer MBUX or Cammand system? As has been said the interlockiinterlocking provides a reminder to open a window and won’t start lowering. It also stops part way down. If it doesn‘t do this, there might be a fault in the interlocking in which case you might have some redress.
It‘s belt and braces, but many people open the side door when closing so that there is absolutely no chance of the increased internal pressure forcing the bellows outwards.
Regarding other comments about squeaks, I wonder wheather the locking bolts need adjusting/greasing.
Finally the wardrobe light: Having left the wardrobe door open for a considerable time and almost flattened the battery, mine is now permanently turned off with a neodymium magnet taped to the door.
It’s the new Mbundu, it does stop half way down but certainly now warning, it makes me fearful of closing the roof. Which shouldn’t be the case on a high end vehicle

No hand over, I don’t think the local dealer had ever sold one. The model I have is the 2021 model with MBUX control

Hello and welcome Paul

GT is correct above. When I hit the roof button it also stops after a few seconds with the window icon so effectively you have to press the button twice to operate the roof
I have been out to my van tonight to check and i have to accept that a warning to open a window does come up when you operate the roof. It does stop at a point which i assume is when you are to check everything is retracting correctly. But i myself write plc software for food production lines, and it would be so easy to create a logic in the software to open a window automatically when retracting the roof. Yes i should have been more careful, but i work in an industry where we create safety systems which are designed to protect idiots. I guess I’m the idiot on this occasion.

The manual is about 90 pages not 400 and it clearly states to open a window or door before you operate the roof otherwise the bellows could be damaged.

It goes on the mention it a further three times plus when actually doing the operation the window symbol flashes in the display.

Unfortunately for you I'd say MB were right to say it was your fault.
I accept this, but a simple software mod to force a window to open Would be a sensible solution and save a lot of heart ache, i maybe speaking only for myself but i generally work most things out without reading 90 page manuals, life is too short.

Fair play, good to see you reply so concisely.

Dread to think what would happen if you asked a UK dealer to swap out the canvas for something else
It's a canvas that can now be ordered from the configurator from the factory and OEM canvas. Mercedes parts desk will order it and it's not much different than if the original canvas was damaged and needed replacement. Not under warranty in this case though obviously. ;-)

I also have a background in software. For me, automatically opening anything is probably not ideal, e.g. you wouldn't be thankful if heavy rain was blowing in. But I agree, a simple software function to prevent closing the roof until either front window or the sliding door is open would work perhaps

If you have a roof replacement by MB they have to disconnect and remove EVERYTHING (I mean everything) from the original roof as the new roof supplied is the fibreglass part only (in primer)....so I would guess that any MB dealer who has done a roof replacement should in theory also be able to do a canvass replacement....also any Westfalia roof specialist should be able to carry out a canvas replacement.

OK, maybe call the after-sales manager from the dealership and discuss the issue. Explain you didn't get a handover of this clearly critical component and that you are just upset about the current condition of the roof.
I would say be polite (I am sure you are anyway!) but business' and people generally want to support nice, polite and helpful customers as they want the to keep them coming back. Offer to support them with handovers or future MP sales by bringing your MP in as a demo or anything else that they can think of to assist...if they can assist you seeking a repair under warranty or as goodwill (or even a partial refund or repair)
You never know, it might just get you a bit further down the line towards sorting it.
Good luck!
