Glass sink cover

Hi,
Just enquiring whether anyone else has had a problem with the glass cover over the kitchen sink.
While enjoying a picnic yesterday we noticed that ours has a defect in the glass. It looks like it’s two pieces of glass bonded together and the glue/resin is bubbling between the panes.
We wonder if this is a common issue before we speak to the dealer?

My guess is the sink cover has been left down while cooking and the heat has been deflected from a large pot/pan on the right hand burner.
Although the operating instructions state the gas flame should not reach past the base of the pan, there in nothing in the operating instructions (that I can find) to advise that the sink cover should be up when the cocoker is in use. Therefore not fit for purpose!
Good luck with the dealer.

Thanks for the replies, I can see that this will be the excuse from the dealer.
However it is not the case. We are certain that it was not like it when we bought the van and we haven’t used the cooker yet.
From the condition of it and all the other equipment we don’t think it has ever been used as a camper.
Our only two holidays so far we just used it to tow the caravan.
We’ll add it to the list of faults to be sorted when it’s serviced next month and hope for the best.

I have just noticed there are several posts on Facebook about this.
Also there is more clearance between the left burner and the fridge top.
The instruction transfer tells you to follow the instructions ( ! ) so arguably there is a cop out for the dealer but my guess MB‘s first priority is ventilation.
If the covers are that sensitive to heat it wouldn’t have hurt MB/Westfalia to put a transfer by the right burner advising to lift the sink cover when in use.

You are 100% in your post....possibly the fridge has a metal shield along the edge from memory?

I think the older MP had a sink/cooker lid combined (like the Cali) which makes sense but reduces workspace...a solid piece of glass could have been an idea, instead of a laminate. Or maybe a small burner/large burner combination.

Agreed ! Or another small deflector plate possibly removable for cleaning.

Probably worth reiterating for anyone who has not seen the threads, the glass covers scratch easily and a runner, cork mats or similar are a worthwhile investment.

Just to update the thread I took it in for its service yesterday.
The dealer agreed to order a new cover under warranty without any hesitation.
Makes we wonder if its something they’ve seen before but I’m glad it’s getting sorted at no cost to me.

Hi Blackrat. You have done really well. I drive a 2017 MP that is out of warranty and wanted to fix my mistake of leaving down the sink top whilst cooking. I have the same damage and asked for a cost to replace it from my local dealer. I was quoted £780! I have ordered some laminate to cover the damage instead at £35. I always lift the sink top when cooking nowadays.

Ouch !
For that sort of price it would be worth sourcing the material ( I assume it’s toughened laminate) and finding a specialist contractor to cut a new top.

Hi,
In that case I’m very happy they agreed to replace under warranty.
At that price I think I would have lived with it, we keep it covered anyway.
