My solution for the protection of the easily scratched floor.
Those "tiles" are available in Aldi (when they are gone, they are gone). £11 for six. 60cmx60cm. They also have some slightly smaller (56cmx56cm if I remember right) and thinner ones, £8 for four.
I had some rugs from Ikea before but they looked a little bit untidy.
