Having been trolling sites for hours for (MOTOR) Insurance for my V220D Sport . now some sites recognise my vehicle as a van, some don't. Some say they will not insure a campervan some will. Talk about confused.com. Even Mercedes Exeter say they will only service it, not MOT it. A sub division of Mercedes say as my campervan has the car steering wheel they class it as a car NOT A VAN and will only Service it not MOT it. Any way my head is truly done in now (HeHe). My question is please do share with me who do you insure your CAMPERVAN with please. mine is the Mercedes V220 D Sport. Many Thanks in advance, DONE IN DAVE.

Hi Dave

My situation is slightly different as I’m full time living. House was sold and rather than pay rent and no conversion’s available to my liking due to Covid and stock shortage, decided to live full time in MP
All the motor home insurance companies I tried weren’t interested. After 3 days came across this broker

Sterling insurance brokers
insurance provided by ERS they seem to cover all unusual vehicles or situations.
Gave a mates address but made them aware this was only a postal address.
took a bit of explaining as first of all they wanted me at his address every night and then requested I stay on a camp site.
Once I explained I’d always be with the van and whilst working it was in a secure compound, they agreed I could stay anywhere in the UK.
They admitted this was a new area for them but are now advertising full time van cover.
it wasn’t cheap at £1000 + full NCB
but as I’ve said
No one else was interested
It’s due for renewal in 2 weeks, so I’ll see what this years price is.
hopefully going along to the NEC for the camper show this weekend and be interested to speak to insurance companies face to face

sorry it’s a bit long winded, that’s just me

Regards
Lee

Hi Dave,

I’m with LV (Liverpool Victoria) 4 yrs old same model, fully comp at just under £300…. I have another car on the policy for slightly less… so that price may be discounted slightly for two vehicles. Other considerations… no claims age points etc etc will impact your cost.

I bought mine from Mercedes van centre in Exeter but have mine serviced…. And MOT’d ! At the car dealership in Exeter. It’s not cheap but I like the free Mercedes break down cover you get with it when they service it. Better likelihood of them having the expertise and parts to fix over other breakdown firms… which I have for my other car.

I'm with AIB Insurance, insured as a camper so includes personal effects, luggage, camping gear like awning etc up to £5000
Premium was £350 for myself and wife last May, lots to affect the premium so that's only a guide.

Comfort, NFU Mutual, Safeguard and as mentioned LV are a few more to try but whoever make sure it's proper camper/motorhome insurance that covers awning damage etc

Just had a B service at Exeter and was charged nearly £400 for what was basically an oil change and screen wash. Dropped it off at 8:45 had to kick my heals round Exeter all day, didn't get home till gone 6:00. It's a 2.5 hr round trip for me but they wanted £60 for a courtesy car overnight. Awful customer service!! Oh and I need an MOT by 12th March but they were fully booked till the end of march!

Cheers matey, I also find Exeter Mercedes Marsh Barton awful to deal with. Dave.

My experience is that if you are with a specialist insurer/broker it may be a few £ more but you can be confident of full cover of a campervan not the v220/250 MPV part of it. We pay a bit more on top of standard premium with Comfort as well, I have business mileage included which isn't a campervans usual usage.

I have a big mistrust of insurance companies, and have had some vague answers from some mainstream names so have not gone with them, plus for us the price is only c£100 cheaper, so not worth the worry. We made a claim about two years ago and Comfort were great.
