Apparently The tpms sensors battery dies after a number of years, who knew? Well I didn’t mainly because I’ve never had a 7 year old car before I guess.

A trip to parts at Merc tells me they are £65 a corner. (Not sure if that was a vat inclusive price).

My local trusty tyre place suggests I need three and they supply and fit for £85 a corner. No doubt the fourth will fail shortly.

Any thoughts or advice? Online there are lots of cheap varieties, anyone done this themselves? Getting the tyre off the rim and making sure the new valve is sealed correctly would be the challenge I guess.

I’m going to take the car to another fitter to compare costs and whether they diagnose the same three sensors as faulty today before shelling out £255.

Seems a thing, if I could get the tyres off the rim and ensure the new valve was sealed properly I’d do it myself but not sure it’s worth the hassle.

They use a scanner to connect to each tpms sensor and determine if it’s good or bad. I do trust my local place but odd that my car is showing only one reading is missing and I’m being told that three are needed. Thus I am going to shop around and see what others say.

As ever there are OEM and third party options and prices vary widely.
 
Just had a similar experience with my E220d estate, yesterday.Car is 9 years old.
Similar prices quoted at Mercedes and local tyre shop.£78 fitted per sensor
Used ChatGPT and it’s come back with an after market Hamaton EU-pro that are precoded, so no setup required. £124 for the 4. Appear to have a good write up. Can order from ukpartsdirect .
These are for an E220 W213, so Marco prices may differ.

I hate swearing on here and let’s hope the moderators don’t give me a ban but I’m going to pop into kwikfit tomorrow for another opinion. No doubt they’ll try and upsell me and try and get me to buy a new set of shocks, springs and an exhaust system.
 
Kwikfit (shudder) £80 a corner, another local place £65, had a brainwave…Costco £50. Booked in for Sunday. Update to follow.

Hi George,

Had my front left go two months ago.

It’s an MOT failure if it’s not rectified by then.

Mercedes main dealer was MUCH more expensive than required, however a local tire fitters could not reprogram the TPMS to the van… (that was ATS, Pro-tire and National tires). It’s a STAR system to re-code the TPMS.

I went to a local Merc Specialist who sorted it for me at about 1/3 of the main dealer price.
 
So COSTCO told me that only one sensor was faulty. Rather than spend money unnecessarily I just changed out the drivers side front one.

£42 and all is well with the world again (for now).

They used schrader valves btw so they are branded.

Can anyone change these units to Bar? I can’t see an option on the instrument cluster.

I had all 4 changed when the tires were up for change. I asked several other shops but had to have it done by Mercedes as the other shops could no guarantee that they would be able to code them correctly. Price was approximately 600 euro in total
 
So I have one new one fitted by Costco for £42. Reckon they will all start failing over the next few months. I’ll wait for the next one to go and just get the remaining ones done at Costco. They were by far the cheapest and best value in my local area (Glasgow).

I should add that I sourced a place in Paisley near Glasgow who were offering to supply a “programmed” TPMS sensor for £40. I’d still needed to have them fitted by a tyre place.

I’m sure you can buy them online cheaper but unless you can change your own tyres, seal the valves and re balance the wheel (if necessary) then it’s hard to see how £42 can be bettered.

I’m sure this will come up more and more often as the battery in the valves lasts anywhere from 5-10 years.
