DVLA V5

DVLA rejected my application to have my MP reclassified as a Motor Caravan despite it clearly meeting their published criteria at https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...caravan/converting-a-vehicle-into-a-motorhome. I have written to them contesting their decision. Researching the matter further, I came across this https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/267623 . It seems DVLA have now decided that reclassification only applies if externally the vehicle looks like a motor home but it seems did not publish this change of policy. If they refuse again, I shall refer the matter via my MP to the Parliamentary Ombudsman.

I think the main point here is that the Marco Polo base vehicle is a Mercedes Benz V Class. The V Class is classed as a car and not a van (I think this is the reason why it is sold through car dealerships and not commercial vehicle dealerships) and hence MB are not converting a van, but a car to a camper van !! Maybe the MP is a camper car !

Just a thought.

I may be being dim but can I ask why you wish to reclassify?
What are the advantages / disadvantages?

Apparently a number of MP owners have had their’s reclassified and this seems to be a change in policy by DVLA that they haven’t made public.

I might also be a bit confused. Our MP has been insured through Safeguard (am I allowed to say this in the forum?) and they know that it is a motorhome and find insurers who will underwrite it as such. Just a thought. Our other car is insured as normal through one of the well known companies.

I asked this question to my insurer as my V5 shows our MP as being and MPV. Their reply was that the DVLA are only classifying vehicles more on what they look like rather than technically by what they are. They did say that I can still insure it as a campervan even though the V5 states MPV.

My MP is classified as a five seater diesel car (mine has the fifth seat option !!) on the V5. I don't understand why the Marco Polo seems to have no standard classification with DVLA. All very confusing.

I think this has been raised before, but what should you book the vehicle as on ferries/Eurotunnel, a car or a campervan? I couldn't face any hassle last time and paid the premium as a campervan, but if the DVLA says its a car, then surely it can be booked as a car?

I’ve used the eurotunnel several times and always booked as a large car and never had a problem.
