Market place restrictions for items for sale

It looks like unless you pay to become a VIP member you can't reply to the items for sale or message other members anymore. I was very interested in an item just posted up today but can't reply, so unable to progress with it. :(

Yes, you cannot advertise unless you join, so I joined, and now find no one can reply to my ads. unless they become a VIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A complete and utter waste of time and money:(.

This happened to a motorbike forum I used to use, it died not long after because running a forum is simple anyone can set one up they are free or inexpensive and scalable.

It’s not really a workable model having VIP that can advertise to only VIPs, I feel for you @catracer

I prefer forums to Facebook, but not being able to message other members is quite fundamental. I suppose I should take the current advice of the greatest person on earth, trump, if you don’t like it here - leave

For not much more than the cost of annual membership and about an hours work, someone could set up a replacement forum with no real bother. Not sure where the costs are or why the requirement to monetise it came from.

This is the sister forum to the VW Cali forum where it has long been the practice that only VIP members can PM and far from shrinking that forum has grown to over 15,000 members.

To say setting up a forum is free, well go ahead then, do it. If you want something of such limited bandwidth the speeds crawl along, images are strictly limited and facilities are practically zilch then please, do it for free. It actually costs a hell of a lot of money for the capacity the VW, and this forum, has.

You could *easily* run this off a shared hosting instance for pennies. The Cali one I grant you will be busier, but this one is next to nothing in bandwidth surely ?

Good afternoon Brian we have made a few changes to the settings the marco polo vehicles for sale is only temporary and will have its own dedicated section in time. So now any registered user has the ability to send personal messages. once the classified section is up and running then anyone will be able to contact the seller.

I have just paid to become a VIP Membee and find that I can’t access the section for selling my MP. Anyone help please

Sorry but the forum is essentially a shop front, a zenForo licence is $160 and it could quite easily be hosted on an old pc under your desk, domestic WiFi speeds are capable of streaming 4K movies I doubt any forum is transferring data at that rate. Yes hosting can be expensive but noting like as expensive as physical bricks and mortar and a captive audience.

Whoever runs the show here had everything wrapped up nice and snug but setting up a pay-per-view hierarchy has set off alarm bells for me, members offering free advice and sharing their extensive knowledge from the goodness of their hearts and who gets to profit from the knowledge disseminated in this extended shopfront?

Method7 & Brian have similar views to me; I'm here to volunteer info i have and hopefully get help from other members if possible. I'm not the social media generation, i'm not a passionate car marque loyalist as many VW's owners are (if the MP was audi/BMW etc that would be fine), so here because of practicality/usefulness. I suppose I'm also more like Victor Meldrew than Mark Zuckerberg , not sure if that's a good thing but I will quietly stand on principal for relatively small things. I'm pleased that the messaging has been reinstated, thank you to the administrators, that was a red line for me. I also have no issues with VIP/executive areas, but just blank them out for us in cattle class then well never know what we are missing. I did think it was strange to only allow private sales to a small audience, market coverage is a key part of getting stuff sold, 'Market place' here ticks the box of concentration but you need to be able to reply.

Didn't mean to stir up any ill feeling, was just annoyed at the removal of messaging, but that's resolved for me so back to enjoying discussing our van's - the good the bad and not so much of the ugly!
