Winter Tyres

Hi all,
I am currently considering wether I should fit winter tyres/wheels to my MP. I have the 250 AMG with 19inch wheels.
Any advice or experience you may have with winter tyres and any brand recommendations would be most welcome.

Good question and I'd like to know as well. I think the MP comes with summer tyres as standard and would wonder if it's okay to fit winter tyres or any all season tyres gearing towards winter to drive all year round without swapping. Thanks

Depends on where you think you are heading off to.

Winter tyres for me are essential for I do a lot of off road camping in fairly wild places in winter. Unless you anticipate getting stuck in deep snow drifts and driving consistently in temperatures below 7c then there are alternatives.

If you are heading for countries that insist on snow rated tyres (Snow symbol on the firewall), i.e. Most of Scandinavia between October and May, parts of Alpine France, Germany, Austria etc, then you may want to consider All season, Goodyear vectors, Michelin Cross-climate etc. There is often a lot of talk about being jack of all trades - Master of none but I have quite happily run my camper on 4 season winter and summer and to be honest the all season performance - wet in summer and wet and ice in winter is marginal compared to specialist summer and winter tyres.

All season are also excellent in dragging you out of mud, an important consideration any time of year.About three years ago when we had the winter of storms in quite mild spring weather in Devon I went mud-plugging, unintentionally, and found my Goodyear vectors performed admirably.

I am not technical enough to comment on wheel size though. Tyres might be all right but you may struggle if you need chains on a larger wheel.

Product rivalry aside there have been many threads on tyres in the Cali forum and currently we have an ongoing one regarding winters.

I was somewhat shocked to find the loaded MP I took off the showroom floor came with summer tires! Salesman said that was typical. I cannot believe this all-wheel drive vehicle does not come with all season tires. I've got the 19" AMG 5-Spokes, will likely get the same rim and put an ultra-high performance tire on it. Required by law here in northern Italy where we live and definitely worth having when the weather gets soupy. Any winter tire suggestions for this somewhat heavy vehicle? By the way, it's my commuter not just a leisure vehicle.

Hi ive just returned from france in our 2018 MP AMG 250 ... Wheel/tyres im prety good at but not with MP.. I fitted Nokian All weather 17'x45 x 235 perfect rain ice snow... but long dodgy tracks rough camping... One needs good side walls ( especially when we load up to the hilt with stuff) so the answer would definitely be for me BFG AT all round, but although familiar with them not for MP - what size 17 or 18' Any experience on this?
Cheers

Ive done it.. 235 x 55 x 18 General Grabber ATs3 as complete package supplied by Rogue alloys. A bit close on the front but not touching on full locks ( it does look very close though) thats one compromise... Wheels/Tyres look stunning (MSWs) the ride is perfect/quiet too just fiddling with tyre pessures - great for what we do tramping down Autoroutes going up/down gravely pot hole roads/wet grass/towing overweight trailers with very overweight AMG MP 250d -with all obvious additions on board. I will report back after the second compromise.... changeing the tyre pressure sensors over from my last ones... thats a real pain, but.. an MOT failure! These tyres have a great load rating with good strong walls, these vehicles need that if your putting them to work as designed.. Pics on very dirty van (sorry). - This has been tricky as to get ATs on an MP as sizing is crucial, hopefully helps some people, good value too?

NB Im Still testing the above as there is very little room Lock to lock on front... I will revert with my opinion, ie are they good enough to put up with a little touching.. I hope so.

Well done for being a guinea pig.
As you say, good sidewalls are a must if you want to get off the beaten track.
Do the tyres actually touch and how are you for clearance with suspension travel?

I’ve fitted Michelin cross climate they haven’t been used in bad weather yet they give a much quieter and more comfortable ride.
