Portable solar panel

Has anyone connected a portable 'briefcase' style solar panel directly to the Marco Polo's leisure battery? If so is it relatively easy to access it?

Yes, I did that. I had a connector fitted to the leisure battery so that I just remove the side panel to the battery (under the passenger seat), plug in the portable solar panel, and close the side panel. I've put the panel on the roof and on the windscreen, depending on where the sun was. Problem with a portable panel is the chance of someone stealing it, if you leave the vehicle, and leaving the window slightly open as the panel needs to be outside the vehicle to work well (I have tried it inside, against the front window). I think my panel is 80W.
