Servicing Costs

My MP is coming up for its first (2 yearly) service. As the MP has been available in the UK for over 2 years now, I was wondering if members could give me feedback on servicing costs. I’m expecting the worst because the odd time I’ve considered buying a Mercedes car I’ve been put off by the ridiculous, and to my mind unjustifiable service costs. When I owned a VW California for 4 years the service costs were quite reasonable, largely because they came under the auspices of the VW Van Centres. The service manager at my local Van Centre told me at the time that the servicing costs for Van based VW’s had to be reasonable because the tradesmen who bought them wouldn’t wear high service costs and would either buy something else or go to an independent for servicing. My previous ‘Van, a Westfalia Columbus based on a Fiat Ducato, cost £200 for a minor service and £400 for a major.

I‘ve noted in earlier posts, when people had to rely on speculation for likely service costs (largely because dealers are notoriously vague and misleading in their advice on costs and I’ve even been lied to about the servicing costs of a V70 before I agreed to buy it) and some have suggested going to a Mercedes van dealer for servicing. Has anyone done this, because I’ve seen it suggested that the Van Centres will refuse to service the MP because it’s a car - in fact they are designated an MPV on the V5.

We've just had our first service on MP - also 2 years old, 8000 miles. It was £375 (including VAT) for a 'minor' service but included brake fluid service and micro filter. They also updated the satnav / Command.

Thanks Claire, I’m amazed at my cynicism. I’ve been told by, I think someone at Mercedes HQ that You can get quotes from different Mercedes dealers in your area. Did you do this, or did you just use your nearest dealer? My MP has done a shade under 7,000 miles so should be similar. Bargain

No we didn't get different quotes but did some research on the internet to make sure it was the right ball park. I've heard that prices vary. Apparently Mercedes commercial is cheaper. But our MP was with the dealer anyway getting its roof replaced so we just had the service done there. It went in start of March, only recently returned!

Join mercedesclub.org.uk and you'll get 15% off servicing costs at many MB dealers. You'll get more than your sub back in yr1 and if you own 2 Mercs even better! Check out the back pages of back issues of their magazine on the website to see if there is a participating dealer in your neck of the woods.

Check out the back pages of back issues of their magazine on the website - I don't think you need to subscribe to do this.

Thanks presumably to Covid 19 staffing issues I couldn’t get any answer from MB either on phone or online for a service booking so have ended up taking my 2-year-old MP (15k miles) to an independent German cars specialist in Camden for its first service. Price inc. VAT £294, which seems reasonable.

Like you I’ve struggled to get hold of anyone at my local Mercedes dealer. After several attempts I got through to someone working from home who attempted to cobble together a quote for first 2 year service. It was something like £330 inc VAT. However, he said he would get the service team to confirm the price. Needless to say I didn’t get a call back. I tried on three further occasions to get a firm price to no avail.
I eventually booked it in anyway, despite their computer saying it was due a major B service at 6,700 miles! Shortly after this, a message came up on the command display when I was driving to say my vehicle was due an A service shortly. I phoned service to tell them this and I would not be paying for a major service.
They really are useless! Just as well I’ve avoided the temptation to buy a Mercedes car on a number of occasions in the past.
I’m getting to the point with the MP I was at with a VW California, after four years of ownership from new, when I just got fed up with all the issues. On the MP - Habitation: new roof, new upper bed structure and mattress, wonky table leg - unfit for purpose; Mechanical: Fuel gauge intermittent fault they can’t trace on their diagnostics (handy when your in a remote area of rural Spain as we were last Summer), duff leisure battery and failed side door electric motor assembly. And that’s in the first 15 months!

Had no problem with MB at Cheltenham and Gloucester. First service (service A) at 2 years old was £325 inc VAT.

Just had my first (2 year) service. £329 .93. Extraordinary that they charge £115 + VAT for oil! They must make £100 profit on that as they buy in bulk. It will probably get worse as I was reading today that increasingly new car sales will be online. VW are selling their new electric car direct. The dealers will just be a facilitator and receive a fixed fee for organising the handover. This means that most of main dealers turnover will inevitably have come from servicing and repairs to pay for their ‘glass palaces’.

Returning to a year old thread for any updates.
I've just been quoted - after an incredibly poor 3 day runaround to get a quote!! - over £500 for service A which sounds very excessive to me. Can anyone who has had a main dealer service A in recent months provide any feedback on their service costs and experience please

£599 for small service at MB South Ltd, Crawley on 16th April 2021

I didn't pay this nor would I have done, it was due as the vehicle was 2yrs old. It was being sold to me by Campersales so they paid for it.

I'm sure they just make these number up as that's about 70% more than the £350 @Steve B paid.

Parts were £208.40, Labour £290.77 and VAT £99.83.

I was quoted £525 something. When I queried the quote he said the brake fluid was due a change.
What makes me a little wary (aside from the cost) is he couldn’t tell me ‘from the system’ so had his colleague manually add up the service cost, I.e. labour, oils etc

I’m wondering what a standard V-Class service A is too compare

I doubt there is a Standard charge from what I've seen and heard.

What really bugs me is that most vehicles can go 12k even 20k as in the Fiat Ducato I had previously without changing any fluids, and yet at less then 3k they dump the oil and brake fluid, and did all the filters really need changing? Make as much money as they can by changing things that don't need to be changed and bugger the customer and the environment.

Can't make head nor tail of this:

The thing is that brake fluid is hydrophilic and collects water, making it much less effective as it ages...water in yer brakes in a 2t van anyone? Brake fluid needs changing every two years really.

But 8 ltr of oil seems a little on the high side? I have no idea what the sump holds on a V250 but 8ltr ?
